Osegyehyang (오세계향), Insadong: Vegan Korean Food in a Backstreet Hanok

IIf you want to eat actual vegan Korean food in Seoul, and I mean stews, ssam wraps, and dumplings, Osegyehyang is the place I send people first. It sits in a small alley about 30 meters off the main Insadong strip, 5 minutes on foot from Anguk Station exit 6, and it holds a 4.3 rating on Google Maps with 1,112 reviews as of July 19th, 2026, plus a 4.3 on Tripadvisor across 121 reviews. On any given evening, half the tables are foreigners who found it the same way you just did.

Why Osegyehyang is the first stop for vegan Korean food

Everything on the menu is vegan. Not “vegan if you ask nicely”. No animal products, no MSG, and they cook with organic rice. So the stews are safe, the dumplings are safe, the kimchi is safe. If you have spent any time in Korea decoding ingredient lists, you know how rare that is.

Most vegan spots in Seoul serve burgers, bowls and pasta. That is fine, but you did not fly to Korea for a buddha bowl. This kitchen makes the dishes Koreans actually eat, in fully vegan form, which is why it has survived in this alley for years while trendier places open and close around it.

What it’s like inside

You leave your shoes at the door and sit on floor cushions at low tables, the traditional way. If your knees complain, come anyway, just stretch out early. Barley tea is free and refilled without asking.

The menu is long and covers most Korean classics with soy and mushroom standing in for meat. There is an English version with photos, so you can point even when the staff’s English runs out.

What to order

One ordering tip that will save you an awkward moment: the famous fried-mushroom-in-sweet-sauce dish goes by its exact menu name, maesil tangsuchae (매실탕수채, ₩14,000, about US$9.40). Ask for it by that name. The kimchi tofu stew and the bulgogi-style ssam set come up in reviews constantly too, with one warning: the stews run genuinely spicy.

Prices start around ₩8,000 and most dishes stay under ₩15,000, which for central Seoul is very fair. Between two people, three dishes is plenty.

Is Osegyehyang worth it?

Yes, especially if it is your first week in Seoul and you are tired of playing ingredient roulette. It is not fancy, the seating takes commitment, and the spice level is honest. But this is vegan Korean food the way it should taste, at prices that let you order half the menu. Start here, then work through the rest of my Seoul vegan guide as I add more spots.
